"Latakia" tobacco, named after Syria's Mediterranean port, is one of the world's best-known oriental tobaccos — leaves fire-cured over oak, giving it a bold, smoky character. Despite years of unrest, limited production continues along Syria's coast and it remains a signature component in many premium hookah blends.
Egypt is the industrial heartland of "maassel" — tobacco cured with honey or molasses — the base of most major hookah brands, including Nakhla and (partly) Al Fakher, whose packaging also happens in the UAE.
The UAE, especially Dubai and Sharjah, has become the region's packaging, branding, and re-export hub: raw or semi-finished tobacco arrives from Egypt, Syria, and even Iran, gets finished and packaged, then re-exported to European and American markets.
